Want to get rid of old furniture? You need to know about WUDS and why you should pick a responsible waste disposal company like DOW UK.

If you’re having a clear-out or planning to throw out some unwanted furniture, it’s essential that you know about WUDS and the law.

In January 2023, new procedures came into effect for disposing of many household furniture items that contain chemicals (including fire retardants) that damage the environment.

WUDS stands for Waste upholstered Domestic seating.

From a householder point of view, it basically:

  • Sofas/Sofa beds
  • Armchairs
  • Kitchen and dining room chairs
  • Stools and footstools (upholstered)
  • Home office chairs
  • Futons, bean bags and floor and sofa cushions
  • Electrical recliner chairs

It’s now illegal to dispose of these items in landfilled sites. Instead, they must be incinerated. The new procedures have been enforced since 1st February 2024.

So, how can you dispose of your Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (WUDS) containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS)?
