Everything you need to know about hiring a skip from Dow
Skip Hire Questions
Perhaps it’s the first time you’ve hired a skip. Or maybe it’s just the first time you’ve considered hiring from us.
These are the questions that most people ask our knowledgeable staff. They’d be delighted to speak to you. But if you’d prefer to find out a bit more before you contact us, read on.
We hope you find them helpful.
Q. Where Can I Put my Skip?
Most people will have their hired skip placed on their driveway.
That’s because to place a skip on a public road you need a permit from your local council, and lights and a cover for the skip.
Arranging permits can take up to 10 working days, so please book your skip in advance and ensure that you have the permit available when we deliver the skip.
Please call our knowledgeable team on 01236 730 730.
At Dow, we understand that buying a permit and hiring of the associated safety equipment can add to the expense of your skip hire.
So we also offer a “wait and load” service as an alternative to full-day hire.
Q. What is “Wait and Load”?
Dow’s “wait and load” service is where our team delivers the skip, waits for you to load it, and then takes it away immediately.
This way you don’t need to arrange for a permit, lights or cover for your skip.
Our knowledgeable staff are happy to arrange to have the skip delivered at a time convenient for you and, if required, with a driver who can help you load.
Q. What is a Cage Lorry?
A cage lorry is a 7.5 tonne-vehicle with an enclosed cage attached with a capacity of nine cubic metres.
An ideal waste collection vehicle for a home or office clearance, or in a “wait and load” situation, a cage lorry avoids the difficulties of having a skip positioned on a highway for any length of time.
Particularly in city centres or congested areas.
As with our skip “wait and load” service, we are happy to arrange the cage lorry to arrive at a time that suits you, with a driver who can help you load.
Q. What Can I Put in my Skip?
Almost anything you like!
Most items that you consider to be waste, or unwanted, can easily go into a skip or waste container.
Skips (up to 8 cubic yards) and open containers can be used for heavy waste, including rubble and soil.
Please discuss your disposal requirements with our friendly and knowledgeable team, who will be happy to advise of the most suitable waste container for your needs.
Q. What Can’t I Put in my Skip?
There are a number of restricted items that cannot be placed in a skip, although we are happy to dispose of these for you safely at an additional charge.
These include:
- Car batteries.
- Clinical waste.
- Liquids.
- “Smelly” waste.
- Large tree roots/logs.
- Hazardous/corrosive substances.
- Oily wastes.
- Batteries or any other wastes classed as hazardous.
- Tyres.
- Fridge freezers.
- Gas cylinders.
- Fire extinguishers.
- Televisions.
- Monitors.
- Fluorescent tubes.
- White goods.
In addition, Dow offers a full asbestos service, where in addition to removing the material, we can complete all of the necessary paperwork for you.
To find out if any items you have are classed as restricted, please contact our team for advice.
Q. How Much Can I Put into the Skip?
All skips must not be loaded to a level higher that the top of the skip.
Q. What are your Terms & Conditions?
As the hirer of the unit, customers are responsible for any skip or container while in their control. A skip connot be hired out to be placed on a road without a permit, although Dow are happy to book a permit for you at the time of order at an additional cost.
In addition to acquiring a permit, when a skip is on the road it is the responsibility of the hirer to make it safe for the general public. Cones and lights can be hired with the skip for road use.
When a skip is being placed in a driveway, customers are asked to be aware that due to stabilizing equipment on the skip lorries, although rare, damage to the driveway may occasionally occur.
Q. Apart from Collecting Waste, do you Provide any other Services?
We provide a full range of recycling and waste management services, including fully integrated waste management systems for organisations with regular waste collection and disposal needs.
Contact our friendly and knowledgeable team on 01236 730 730 for more information on how we can work to reduce your company’s waste management expenditure.
Q. How can I pay Dow for their Services?
If customers wish to use our services on a regular basis, we are happy to open an account for them.
However, if a one-off or infrequent service is required, payment can be by debit/credit card, or cash on delivery if preferred.
Unfortunately we can not accept cheques.
Q. Are There any Regulations Regarding Waste Disposal?
As a fully licensed waste carrier, Dow can provide full Duty of Care documentation.
We are also able to advise you on your responsibilities and legal requirements. In addition, our team can also provide advice on what items can be recycled and how best to prepare your waste material for recycling.
Q. Is all Waste Collected by Dow Taken for Recycling?
All of the waste collected is taken to Dow’s Lenziemill recycling facility for sorting.
Waste is sorted both mechanically and by hand into recycling streams for onward shipping to reprocessors.
To ensure that we keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, all recyclable waste from these transfer situations is sent to UK companies for final processing.
Q. How Much Notice Do you Need if I Want to Order a Service?
Twenty four hours.
We guarantee a next day delivery service unless there are special circumstances.
Please note – Dow’s office hours are 0700 to 1800 Monday to Friday and 0800 to 1300 Saturday. We are closed on Sundays. We are only able to guarantee delivery within 24 hours if the skip is booked within these times.
